A lively, interactive 2.5 hour training event for today’s elected member. Based around four modules containing exciting action-learning-sets and a workshop session, the seminar will empower councillors to feel at ease with the invaluable communication channels available through social media and use social networking in a responsible, lawful manner. Members will discover not only can they communicate important messages to their electorate through social media, but that it also provides additional feedback to help them keep in touch with community views.

Background, development, uses & types of media. The top five reasons to use it. Comparisons with traditional communication techniques.
Module 2 – Get Connected!
The soap box has been replaced by a laptop. Choosing one, two or several types of social networking that are right for you. How to use Facebook and LinkedIn. How to Tweet. Blogging. Setting up a DIY website in a just few mouse clicks.
Module 3 – Who to Follow and What to Say?
Developing links with the community. Developing a following for your blog, website or tweet. Learning to integrate social media into your work as a councillor.
Module 4 – Using Social Media Responsibly
Code of Conduct issues. Using social networking lawfully. Defamation. Data Protection.
